3 Ways to Overcome being Overwhelmed as an Artist

Writer's picture: Independent Media NetworkIndependent Media Network

As artist, we go through moments where we feel overwhelmed by the ever-moving environment around us. We try to keep up with current events, movies, media, and new technology. After a while of striving to remain updated with changes to  the environment, it’s draining to our minds.  Therefore, our body has to be in auto pilot before it can progress forward.  To overcome this issue, here are 3 ways to beat being overwhelmed.

Don’t think about it, just do it!

You may feel overwhelmed because you’ve seen the new gear for the new camera that just came out and it’s REALLY REALLY EXPENSIVE! New gear doesn’t make you a better artist. It can only enhance your abilities to do better, but at this present time you’re better. As Public Enemy would say “DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE!” For example, a person may have the money to buy expensive gear, but lack the ability to execute a great image. You don’t have to have the greatness gear to be great, it’s all about execution and belief.

Be Confident, You’re the sh*t!

Sometimes, we lose confidence in our art because of who is not looking at it. In this instance, we need to become our own audience, clapping and praising ourselves. As artists, we look for validation from others for the greatness of our art work, but we should first validate our own work. We have to start believing our art is great, and no one can tell us otherwise. We have to give ourselves pats on the back and feel relieved our art creations are going to be enjoyed by someone.

Recharge your batteries!

You as an artist need time to recharge your batteries. When I say this, I mean to give your mind and body some time to rest. I get it, as artists we work hard to ensure our art speaks for itself, but there needs to be a time to have some Rest & Relaxation. For example, it can be as simple as waking up on a saturday and watching cartoons, eating a bowl of cereal. If we don’t recharge, we may face the effects of being overwhelmed and crashing. So, it’s always good to take some time off from art, and just enjoy being at peace.

I challenge you to first give yourself permission and to praise your art work before looking for validation from others. As Erykah Badu said it best, “we’re sensitive about our shit.” So, we have to take the time to make the time to be the best at what we do. In the midst of striving for greatness, it is important as an artist to always  remember to stop and recharge your batteries. You know your worth, never allow anyone to tell you your art doesn’t belong in a gallery or museum. True art comes from the heart, and your heart speaks volumes.
